LVUSD Team Steps into the Show Ring: Students Judge Administrators at San Bernardino County Fair

Lucerne Valley USD administrators and board member Jessica Risler joined Lucerne Valley FFA teachers and students at the San Bernardino County Fair.

The San Bernardino County Fair saw an unexpected twist this year as school district leaders traded their ties and clipboards for boots and halters in the 2025 Administration Showmanship Competition. Superintendents, administrators, and board members from Lucerne Valley Unified, Snowline Unified, and Apple Valley Unified School Districts stepped into the livestock arena to show sheep—under the watchful eyes of student judges.
The event, designed to bridge the gap between students and school leadership, featured Future Farmers of America (FFA) members from Lucerne Valley Unified School District (LVUSD) teaching the administrators the ropes of sheep showmanship. The students coached their mentors on everything from proper stance to guiding techniques, culminating in a judged competition that flipped the traditional roles.
“It was humbling and hilarious,” said Peter Livingston, Superintendent of Lucerne Valley Unified. “I thought I had it under control until my sheep decided it had other plans and bolted. I guess I need a bit more practice!”

Despite the runaway sheep, the event was a hit with the crowd and participants alike. LVUSD Board Member Jessica Risler and Assistant Principal Jessica Haecker both advanced to the final five, with Risler proudly taking home third place out of approximately 15 participants.
“I’ve never shown livestock before, but the students were incredible teachers,” said Risler. “They were patient, knowledgeable, and honestly tougher judges than I expected!”
Haecker echoed the sentiment, adding, “It was such a fun way to connect with our students and learn firsthand what they’re passionate about. I have a whole new respect for what they do in the ring.”
The event was more than just fun and games—it was a celebration of agricultural education and student leadership. LVUSD FFA members took the lead in preparing the administrators, offering hands-on training and encouragement throughout the week.
“This is what education is all about,” Livingston added. “Learning from each other, stepping out of our comfort zones, and building community.”
The Administration Showmanship Competition is quickly becoming a beloved tradition at the San Bernardino County Fair, and if this year’s laughter-filled event is any indication, it’s here to stay.
